NATFA’s library was established in 1948 when the State School of Theater at the National Theater was awarded the statute of a higher school of theater – State Higher School of Theater. In 2006, the library was restructured into an Academic Information Center, and in 2010 – into an Academic Library and Archive (ALA). The main objective of ALA is to combine traditional library activities with innovative library and information technologies. NATFA’s Academic Library and Archive stores some 63 000 volumes of Bulgarian and foreign books and magazines. It hosts a rich catalogued archive of the Bulgarian theater and cinema which contains all kinds of printed material /posters, photos, programs, brochures, newspaper and magazine clips, etc./ dating from 1879 till present times. Since 2007, the archive is maintained in an electronic version. Users can subscribe for the e-mailing of articles from periodicals.
The following databases are maintained:
Fiction (Bulgarian and international) in Bulgarian, Russian and English, mainly plays, holds the higher share in the Academic Library’s fund. Special focus is placed on art literature – theater, cinema, fine arts albums, criticism. There are also books on philosophy, psychology, ethics. ALA has a rich fund of reference publications – dictionaries, encyclopedias (Bulgarian, Russian, from the Western world). The library has subscribed for and receives Bulgarian and foreign art newspapers and magazines.
In fulfillment of its main objective, ALA offers the users options for:
- Free access to the library’s funds
- Borrowing textbooks and fiction
- Using the reading room. The latter has 38 desks, including 16 with computers and 5 with access to the databases of the Institute of Art Studies at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (under the Bulgarian Art Archives and Advanced Research Technologies Project)
- Internet access
- Wireless Internet access
- Consultations on the work with information resources
- Copying – Xerox copying and printing
The main users of the library include the professors, the students and the administrative staff of NATFA “Krastyo Sarafov”. Other individuals can also use, under specified conditions, the services offered by the library.

During the examination period the Academic Library is open from 9.30 am till 5.30 pm
