Objective and characteristics:
Training is provided in six interrelated modules in three major fields – directing, playwriting and scriptwriting, and editing. The volume of theoretical training and the work on individual practical tasks enable the participants to acquire an initial set of knowledge and professional skills in the field of film and TV directing. Training has a strong practical focus aimed at allowing the participants to master teamwork during the course by going through all implementation phases of a short film form with a length of up to 5 minutes of screen time.

Study plan

Module: Directing І
А. Presenting the study plan to the participants and assignment of the annual practical task: an acting etude under the general topic “Unexpected guest” with screen time limited up to 5 minutes, up to 3 characters, modern setting and action, in an interior environment which is the same for all participants –
B. Theoretical and practical course on: the essence of the filmmaking process and the basics of film directing; the structure and development of the film work; the essence of the main film professions and the specifics of teamwork.

Module: Playwriting and scriptwriting
А. Theoretical and practical course on the basics and rules of film playwriting and scriptwriting. Guided by the teacher, the participants write (on the team and conditions set in Module І) a screenplay for a 5-munite acting etude – in a standard type and form.

B. General discussion of the finished screenplays.

Module: Directing ІІ
Theoretical and practical course acquainting the participants with the production phases of the realization of a film work and the role of the director in each phase, as well as the technique and technology of writing director’s scenarios. Drawing on the acquired knowledge, the course participants organize castings among their course mates for the roles in their director’s etudes. The etudes are rehearsed in advance and each course participant writes a director’s scenario, as well as a detailed director’s explication with an analysis of the idea, the conflict and the characters. Depending on the individual results, the teacher approves a total of 10 etudes to be produced using the production capacities of NATFA.

Practical module: Production of the etudes
Practical implementation of the etudes in cooperation with the parallel School of Cinematography and with the assistance of the Training Studio. The course participants shoot their etudes in the shooting pavilion of the Film Faculty under the direction of a teacher in cinematography. Every course participant is given 3 academic hours of working time for the shooting. Shooting is made with 1 camera under a schedule set by the teacher.

Module: Screen editing
A. The material shot is watched by the teacher in directing and analyzed in terms of its future editing.

B. A practical course where the participants, under the direction of a teacher in editing, edit the material shot to produce their action etudes – picture, sound, titles, music and final dubbing. Each course participant is given 2 academic hours of working time for editing.

Final module: Project defence
The acting etudes produced are shown in the presence of all course teachers and are subjected to professional assessment in the form of a free discussion.

School of PLAYWRITING AND SCRIPTWRITING, DIRECTING AND EDITING OF SHORT FILM FORMS. The course allows for acquiring qualification for practical implementation of short author’s films. It ends with the writing of a screenplay, shooting, editing and showing of the finished film by each one of the participants.

Study plan

This year again the most prestigious Bulgarian institute in the field of theatre and film art, the NATIONAL ACADEMY OF THEATER AND FILM ART “Krastyo Sarafov” organized qualification courses in DIRECTING AND EDITING OF SHORT FILM FORMS. This form of training is suitable for amateurs, candidate students and art professionals. Heads of the schools are professors from NATFA. The fee is BGN 900, payable in two instalments (of BGN 450 each at the start of each semester). Training is organized in 150 academic hours (160 for the drama acting school) spread over two semesters from October till May. Classes are held twice a week from 06.00 till 08.30 pm.
