“Brain Waves Art”

Elaborated by: Jordan Varbanov, Actor

DESCRIPTION OF THE IDEA

On the basis of the collaborative work between an artist and a professional, I will study the connectivity between and focus the research on Empathy. As a professional actor I find an interesting opportunity to find the language of the concrete performing act through scientifically exploring the Empathy that brings the human brain. This performance will be instigated by the reflections that nature and arts bring to the brain waves and how they reflect.

Nature and its sounds and visions can bring us to places that we remember or dream to be. It can make us smile or feel peaceful. This reflection of the brain can make a positive impact on human behavior. It can be referred to as a process that can help realize the importance of nature to society.

With this project, we will analyze the meeting points between the performing arts and microbiology. It will be produced by the usage of information from electroencephalography and creating it into an art form. It will be created music from the waves of the brain and performed at the performance ass well as the actions (the dialogue) from which the waves are gathered. This will be micro-biology information translated into the language of art. Basically, it can be an endless circulating process that can never stop creating art through Empathy. The creative process will be led by Jordan Varbanov (actor), with the collaboration of Spas Kerimov (entrepreneur and microbiologist).

PROJECT PHASES

The project will have four stages and each of them will have an opportunity to be presented physically and digitally.

  • The first stage

The project will start with a conversation between the artist Jordan Varbanov and the micro-biology specialist Spas Kerimov. It will start as an exchange of thoughts on the matter of how the surrounding circumstances, such as the wind, water and forest sounds affect the thoughts as well as the soul of a person. This conversation will be filmed and based on it there will be a performance/public presentation. Some fragments of the footage will be shown at the performance.

  • The second stage

It will be the gathering of information from the electroencephalographic apparatus EEG to study the brain activity of an artist who listens to the sound of nature or exercises an art form(performance of poetry, singing, playing a musical instrument). This part will be independently documented and presented on the performance.

will be the reading of the extracted information. It is the moment when the art will be able to be reproduced. On the basis of these brain waves, we will be able to create art in different forms – composing music/poetry. We will be discussing the conversation( lines from a drama play, or poetry) with another person who is related to the object of the research.

  • The third stage will be the use of EEG to study the brain activity of an artist who is practicing an art form (performing poetry, singing, playing a musical instrument). This will happen in the circumstances of sounds derived from nature (wind, water), as well as the use of speech from the research object within a dialogue that is part of a dramatic work, for which a partner will be required. This part will be able to be independently documented and presented digitally. It will extract information about brain waves while the person is making art. The reliance on retrieved information. This is when the art will be able to be reproduced. On the basis of these brain waves, it will be possible to create art in various forms – composing music. A composer will make a music piece on the base of the collected data.
  • The fourth stage will be the presentation of the creation, which will be accompanied by documentary material for the first two parts of the project. This will be a performance in which part of the activities during which the information from the brain waves was collected will be performed against the background of the music that was created from the collected information.

As conclusion, there will be a discussion between the artist and the micro-biologist, in the presence of an audience that will be able to interact and ask questions. A questionnaire related to the impressions of the project and the impact of the activities included in it will also be prepared for each viewer.

EXPECTED RESULTS:

Defining the importance of sustainability for humans and artists.

  • Creating art, through art with the help of technology methods.
  • Creating art that is alive in every sense of the word, and is connected with scienc.
  • Meeting an artist with his own thoughts expressed through art.

Date and place of the final event: The presentation will be held at the National Academy of Theatre and Film Arts “Krastio Sarafov”, the foyer, first floor at address “St.Karadja” No:20, Sofia,  on 11 November, 19:00 BG time (18.00 CET), 2023.
