in Sozopol: Artists meet audiences

From 26 August to 6 September 2023, the three artists-in-residence Andrea Davanzati (sculptor, Italy), Giulia Pelegrini (painter, Italy) and Dimitris Savva (musician, Cyprus) worked on the development of their creative projects, influenced by their encounter with the “spirit and memory” of Sozopol and the sea, in collaboration with the EMPACT team of the National Academy of Theatre and Film Arts “Kr. Sarafov”.

Andrea Davanzati publicly presented her project “Under the same sky” on September 3, 2023, at the Central Beach in Sozopol. “The sky is always reflected in the sea of the bay and the stars I see are the same I have seen from my land and this has always guided sailors. This means that the soul must change, not the sky. Because the sky is the constant,” shared Andrea. The project includes the reflection of the sky on the sea surface in Sozopol. The idea is to make a composition of stars, a group of luminous elements floating on the surface of the sea. Giulia Pellegrini presented her artistic project “DE(oxygenation)”, which addresses the urgent problem of eutrophication of the Black Sea. It is based on a performance, which emphasizes the interrelationship between humanity and the environment through symbolism and movement. It takes the audiences on a visual journey, a metaphorical exploration of the challenges facing the Black Sea and its potential for recovery. Dimitris Savva composed live, in an innovative way, presenting his project entitled “Black Watering” on 5 September 2023, at the Architectural-Historical Complex “Southern Fortress Wall and Tower”, using a glass bowl full of water. Through his musical project, Dimitris “immersed” us in the water, where besides the beautiful sounds of nature, the audience can also hear the noise of human activities there. The project provokes the audience to be concerned about the “sound pollution” of the underwater world, which is harmful to the organisms living there. The three artists publicly present to various audiences the creative path they passed through to realize their projects. With inspiration, they also talked about what lies ahead for them after the residency in Sozopol. After the finalization of all EMPACT creative residencies in Bulgaria, Italy, Spain and Greece, selected artworks will be presented at the Vorres Museum, Greece in 2024.
